Matron, a young alien from the planet Denzion, has reached his prime. Having matured into adulthood, he is sent out by the Elders of his planet to find his place in the universe. To complete his transition into adulthood, Matron is to go to the planet of Kortiinu, the home of the MapMakers; ancient beings who eternally roam the galaxy and map every sector and chart every planet. From them, Matron is to be given a map, and is to travel to that mapped sector, and learn his destiny, as tradition has it when all young men come of age.
But when Matron lands on the surface of Kortiinu, he finds the planet in ruins. The towering cities of the great civilization, all have been reduced to rubble. There is no sign of life and no bodies are found on the surface of the planet. When he gets to the Map Chambers, where every map is kept, they all are gone, except for one. Matron takes this map, and uses it as his only lead to find the MapMakers and discover what happened to them.
What began as his quest toward adulthood, has now become a hunt, for the greatest race of beings that have disappeared from the face of the universe.
